In this paper, we review the development of polymer optical fibres and present a detailed description on the fabrication of these fibres. In particular, we describe how nonlinear fibre can be made by doping the core with β-carotene. The attenuation characteristics of the fibres fabricated in our laboratory follow the same behaviour as similar fibres developed by other research groups. In addition, we show that the introduction of the nonlinear dopant does not significantly increase the fibre attenuation. Single mode twin-core polymer fibres have also been produced which exhibit coupling behaviour between the cores. These fibres find applications in the construction of many useful communication devices.
