In the world of defense systems, multifunction can mean anything from integrating an amplifier with a filter to integrating radar, EW, communications and identification friend or foe (IFF) technology in the same system with a single aperture. Though the latter definition has lurked in the minds of Pentagon planners for years for wont of the technology to make it possible, it is today being pursued with feverish intensity. The benefits throughout the military are potentially immense, and the approach conforms neatly to DOD's emphasis on size, weight and power (SWaP) and multi-platform versatility -and the coming era of "Doing More With Less." It also requires a state-of-the-art technological tour de force of the magnitude of the most sophisticated defense systems ever built - call it an electronic Swiss Army knife for the 21st century.
