In our last data recorder survey (September 2001), we noted that the old standard of tape as the recording medium was slowly being overtaken by both rugge- dized disk drives and solid-state memory devices. At that time, solid-state storage devices were used in harsh environments when small storage capacities were acceptable. This was because solid-state storage devices were much more expensive than hard disks and could not match the storage density of a hard disk.
