摘要

In 1969, the US Navy looked at airborne engagement experiences in Vietnam and concluded that those pilots that survived their first few encounters with the enemy were most likely to continue to survive. To ensure that this happened the Navy formed its Top Gun School at then Miramar NAS, near San Diego. Now moved to the Naval Strike Warfare Center at Fallon NAS, NV, the regimen continues to train pilots on an instrumented range under conditions as near to actual combat as possible. Weeks before the actual missions, the US Air Force used a mission-rehersal system known as Topscene to prepare its pilots for the upcoming campaign in Afghanistan. By the time they took to the skies, after weeks of studying and flying virtual missions at a dizzying range of altitudes and speeds, over rugged mountain terrain, with detailed representations of buildings, roads, and vehicles, they had unprecedented knowledge of what to expect. The practice and experience thus gained eliminated most surprises and allowed plotting the best routes, spotting landmarks, and identifying targets.
