Fundamentals for the Academic Liaison is one of several books published in the American Library Association (ALA) Fundamentals Series that have, as their primary purpose, the goal of introducing a foundational library service or function, such as reference or instruction, and providing readers with the essential knowledge to get started. The title of this book describes exactly what is offered, the very basics that one needs to know to begin to fill the role of an "academic liaison" librarian. The audience is meant to be either library school students or a librarian who has just been hired into a job with the word "liaison" in the title. Much of the content is directed toward the novice; however, experienced liaisons would also gain from giving this a quick read. There are so many ideas and examples presented that even though a seasoned liaison might think they know it all, there is always the possibility of learning something new.
