Learning Styles of Engineering Technology and Engineering Students: Pedagogical Implications

The results of the first major survey of the learning styles of engineering technology students are reported and compared with previous surveys of the learning styles of engineering students. Similarity in terms of learning styles for engineering technology and engineering students is a tacit assumption of surveys of engineering students, but several variations, determined from this survey, appear significant. The greatest difference found in learning-style preference is that engineering technology students prefer sensory learning over intuitive learning by a large margin when compared to engineering students. When considering student matriculation within the survey results, a considerably higher retention of sequential learners was found for engineering technology students. Variations and similarities between the engineering technology and the engineering disciplines are explained in terms of subject matter and teaching methodology.
