In the present study, three titanium corrugated tubes (22.2 mm O.D. and 0.5 mm tube thickness) having widely different corrugation pitch (2.1 and 22.1 mm) and having the same corrugation depth of 0.2 mm were tested at the steam pressures (from 5 to 10 kPa) of an actual electric utility condenser. Fouling tests were conducted using the silt obtained from an actual power plant site. Fouling control using sponge balls was also examined. Significant enhancement of condensation heat transfer is noted, especially for the 2.1/0.2 tube. The heat transfer enhancement ratios are 4.0 and 2.76 at 5 and 10 kPa, respectively. The tube-side heat transfer enhancement ratios are 1.08,1.06, and 1.03 for the 2.1/0.2, 6.4/0.2, and 22.1/0.2 tubes. The pressure drop penalty factors are 1.56, 1.48, and 1.07 for the 2.1/0.2, 6.4/0.2, and 22.1/0.2 tubes. The fouling test conducted at 1.0 m/s and 2500 ppm concentration revealed that the corrugated tubes fouled faster than the smooth tube. A sponge ball cleaning test on the 2.1/0.2 tube showed that continuous sponge ball injection reduced the fouling resistance to virtually zero.
