Recording observations in a field setting, whether an alpine meadow, museum exhibit, or a third grade classroom, is an indispensible skill for environmental scientists, educators, and researchers. Because this activity is a purely individual type of activity, we seldom see the inner workings, motivation, methods, materials and results of the observations the great field workers. What can we use to guide our own observations, no less the material and techniques of exemplar cases for educating future generations of field scientists?
