The main objective of this paper is to determine the level of heavy metal contamina tion of soils, in the vicinity of iron and steel works in Galati (Romania) which is one of the most important metallurgical complexes in south-east Europe. Because soils are critical environment where rock, air and water interfere, the amount of pollutants in soils located in the vicinity of an industrial plant is very high. In this work X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique was used to evaluate the soil pollution with heavy metals. XRF is an atomic nondestructive spectroscopic technique, it has a good accuracy, precision and sensibility, it is speedy and inexpensive, needs a simple sample preparation, quantitative and qualitative analyses are performed without acid digestion processes and a great number of elements can be determined simultaneously in a short time. The investigated soil samples were collected in open places at different depths from areas located near cultivated and pasture zones, at different distances from the metallurgical plant. XRF analyses were carried out at the Laboratory of European Excellence Centre for the Environment, Faculty of Sciences, 'Dunarea de Jos' University of Galati, using a hand-held NITON XRF spectrometer. XRF results for the homogenised collected soil samples evidenced the existence of some heavy metals: As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn.
