Three-Point Guidance for Intercepting Weaving Targets

Characteristics of line-of-sight guidance are studied against fast-moving weaving targets. Kinematics of the problem is analyzed for speed and acceleration requirements for the missile to follow a line-of-sight course. A closed-form expression for the lateral acceleration is obtained and an analytic upper bound is derived for the maximum lateral acceleration, presenting a much lower requirement as compared with proportional navigation. Simulations, with identical missile lateral acceleration capability as that of the target, highlight a significantly improved miss distance and control effort performance against weave frequency variation and uncompensated autopilot dynamics. Achieving much better miss distances by using a lower control effort highlights a fundamental geometric advantage of using three-point guidance law for intercepting weaving targets.
