EQUATIONS of the relative motion of two satellites with annelliptic reference orbit are nonlinear differential equationsninvolving the radius and true anomaly of the reference orbit. The line-narized equations around the null solution are known as Tschauner-nHempel (TH) equations [1] and contain periodic coefficients. Thusnthe derivation of the state transitionmatrix is not immediate. In earliernstudies [2–4], the true anomaly is used as independent variable,nwhich simplifies the resulting equations. Rendezvous problemswerenextensively studied using this representation [1,5]. Typical problemsnconsidered in the literature involve fixed-time and fixed-end condi-ntions and impulsive maneuvers, and the total velocity changenrequired for rendezvous isminimized. The direct study of the relativendynamics using time as independent variable was initiated by denVries [6], and a series expansion of the state transition matrix in theneccentricity was given by Melton [7]. A closed form of the statentransitionmatrix is recently derived byBroucke [8].Abrief history ofnelliptic rendezvous is also found in [8].
