摘要

Discrete cosine transform (DCT) is the key technique in JPEG and MPEG, which deals with images block by block. However, this method is not suitable for the blocks containing many edges for high quality image reconstruction in particular. An adaptive hybrid DPCM/DCT coding method is proposed to solve this problem. For each block, the edge detector switches to DPCM or DCT coder automatically depending upon quality requirement. The edge blocks are coded by DPCM coder that adaptively selects a predictor from the given set, which results in minimum prediction error, and the residues obtained are coded with Rice code. For non-edge blocks, DCT, run-length and variable length coding (VLC) are applied. Experimental results showed that proposed algorithm outperforms baseline JPEG and JPEG lossless mode implementation both on compression ratio and decoding run-time at the bit rates from 1 to 4 approximately.
