During the 8th year of the Journal, 142 unsolicitednmanuscripts (original research and essays) werensubmitted. As in previous years, the majority (70%)ncame from the UK, 7% from the rest of Europe, 15%nfrom North America and 8% from Australia and NewnZealand. We hope to attract more papers from outsidenthe UK during the coming year. At the end ofnSeptember 2003, 18 (12%) had been accepted fornpublication, 114 (80%) had been rejected, 5 (4%) havenbeen invited to submit a new version and 5 (4%) werenstill being reviewed. At the outset we set ourselves antarget of informing authors of our initial decision withinn12 weeks. Over the eighth year, the mean time was 9nweeks. For the 26 papers published in volume 8, thenmean length of time between submission and acceptancen(including time to revise the manuscript) was 182ndays (range 60–292) and between acceptance andnpublication was 220 days (range 111–349). We willnendeavour to maintain these standards which are onlynpossible thanks to the help of the following people whonkindly agreed to review papers for us during our eighthnyear:
