Court physicians of ancient China were paid only whennthe emperor remained in good health – indeed legendnhas it that they lost their own lives if the emperor’snhealth faltered. This sanction may seem rather extremenby contemporary standards but the story illustrates that andesire to reward doctors for maintaining health – asnopposed to treating ill-health – has a long history.
