Workforce issues are widely regarded as central to thensuccessful organisation and management of health andnsocial care. In all countries, policy-makers and managersnare grappling with both immediate challenges andnlonger term, enduring issues that jeopardise the maintenancenof high quality health services. As with other keynhealth care policy areas, research can contribute tonresolving existing dilemmas and can provide innovatorynideas for the future. In short, research evidence can andnshould be in uencing workforce policy.
