There is a growing recognition that insufﬁcient atten-ntion has been paid to the selection of the outcomes tonmeasure in clinical trials and clinical audit. Outcomesnneed to be relevant to patients, clinicians, purchasersnand policy-makers if the ﬁndings of research are toninﬂuence practice and future research. In addition,nstandardization of outcomes is needed to combinendata from different studies to allow evidence synthesisnand to compare data sets. Inconsistent choice ofnoutcome measures means that many meta-analyses arenunable to include data from all the relevant studies.
