摘要

The Medical Research Council's (MRC) Health Services Research Collaboration (HSRC) has been one attempt to fund high quality HSR in the UK. First thought of in 1993, the HSRC opened in 1998. It closed in 2007, but has research programmes and studentships that will continue until 2009. The story of the ways in which the HSRC was set up and then rather rapidly disbanded is a strange and confusing one that depends a lot on who tells it. But it is not our purpose here to pursue that sorry tale. Instead we want to consider the wider question as to how research funders in the UK, like the MRC and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), should fund applied research such as HSR.
