Objectives: In an essentially applied area of research, there are particular pressures on health services andnpolicy researchers to describe the impact of their work. However, specialized research impact assessmentsnoften require skills and resources beyond those available to individual researchers, and ad hoc accountsnimpose a considerable burden to generate. Further, these idiosyncratic accountsmay not facilitate comparativenanalysis to inform research management, practice and assessment. This paper describes an initialnattempt to develop a methodical approach to identify and describe research impact.nMethods: A Research Impact Framework was developed, drawing on the literature and interviews withnresearchers at the London School of Hygiene andTropicalMedicine, and was used to structure impact narrativesnof selected research projects.These narratives were based on semi-structured interviews with principalninvestigators and documentary analysis of the projects.nResults: Using the framework as a guide, researcherswere relatively easily and methodically able to identifynand present impacts of their work. Researchers’ narratives contained veri￠able evidence and highlightednawide range of areas inwhich health services and policy research has impact.The standardized structure ofnthe narratives also facilitated analysis across projects. Factors thought to positively in￡uence the impact ofnresearch included researchers’ continued involvement in research and policy networks, established tracknrecords in the ￠eld, and the ability to identify and use key in￡uencing events, such as ‘policy windows’.nConclusions: The framework helped develop research impact narratives and facilitated comparisonsnacross projects, highlighting issues for researchmanagement and assessment.
