The Holstein cow probably more than any other requires high quality forage. She requires this not only to maintain the high daily milk production that her high genetic merit breeding designed her for, but also to remain free from the all too common production diseases of SARA (Sub Acute Rumen Acidosis), poor fertility and lameness. Total mixed rations with a forage:concentrate ratio of 65:35 can maintain a milk yield of 10,000 kg and more, while improving fertility and reducing SARA. This is a challenging but also an essential and achievable target on intensive Holstein dairy farms.
