What is a Genetic Base? The 'genetic base' is the group of animals used to form the zero (average) point against which all the proofs are expressed. It effectively forms a fixed point to allow the comparison of animals above and below that point. Every five years, the national average for every trait is recalculated and reset to zero to account for the genetic progress made. Why do we change the base? Genetic improvement is substantial in well run breeding schemes worldwide with the UK being no different. If we did not change the base, all animals would have increasingly very large values for both Production and Type traits, making it difficult to see if an animal you were going to buy or semen you might be planning to use was from a good animal (relative to others) and likely to improve your existing stock. This would result for example in a situation where bulls would have Type Merit values of + 10 if we hadn't changed the base to bring all values back between '+/- 3' Standard deviations. Therefore it is essential to make sure that the values you are used to using and measure improvement by are relative and clear. If the National herd had not improved in all traits over the past 5 years, there would be no need to change the base Dooulation used as the reference point.
