Any librarian aspiring to become library director in an academic setting or in a hospital that is part of a large healthcare system will find valuable insight into what to expect in the climb up the ladder, including recognizing and dealing with institutional cultures and pecking-order political climates, factors that so often impact on the library. And even solo librarians or those with no specific ambition to become an academic library director will nevertheless gain a better understanding of the often complicated maneuvers necessary to get things done in any institution.
