Librarian Participation in Biomedical Informatics Education and Practice

What is the role for librarians in informatics? According to King: Successful informatics education must incorporate a combination of human information management skills and technical training. Librarians are equipped to play an effective role in the nexus of these two areas (17). Biomedical Informatics offers excellent opportunities for hospital librarians to get involved at their respective institutions. Knowledge-based information has become more firmly integrated into the whole of patient care as a result of technology (18). Proactive librarians can engage with the CMIO, Clinical Informatics Fellows, Nursing Information Officers, Pharmacy informaticians, and others. A librarian who works with terminology and hierarchical structure in information retrieval can enhance the discussion of clinical coding which illustrates the reasoning behind other hierarchies of information terminology. With knowledge-based information in hand the hospital librarian may get a behind-the-scenes look at additional hospital operations, the challenges that face their institution, and the similarities and differences in various clinical information systems (18). The librarian can use department meetings as an opportunity to explain electronic publishing and why the busy clinician and administrator cannot access everything online. Another issue hospital librarians face every day is copyright. Clinicians need to have at least a speaking knowledge of who is the owner of an article and why publishers need to be involved in the copyright conversation. Even though a hospital librarian may only be an observer, their participation at Biomedical Informatics meetings, conferences, journal clubs, and clinical grand rounds provides opportunities to show they actively support the program objectives and demonstrate what they can bring to the table for students and faculty.
