Planning Our Future Libraries offers a collection of eight essays discussing the forecast for libraries in 2025. Based on Michael Bucklands' Redesigning Library Services: A Manifesto (1992), an abridged version of which appears in the appendix, Planning Our Future Libraries presents current and emerging concepts the authors believe will impact the evolution of libraries. Although the intention is to offer the reader a guide to planning for the next 10 years, the book is at best a collection of personal views, based on what is known today intermixed with forecast on what might be possible. Concepts presented include the notion of a participatory library where users impact services and resources; the pitfalls of privatization; redesigning space to meet users' needs such as the establishment of learning and faculty commons; the importance of the library not just to content storage but also to content creation; and new roles for librarians that involve becoming more embedded with users. The last essay, which offers a current and future view of international school libraries, seems oddly out-of-place.
