摘要

The history of favelas mirrors the story of waves of urban population growth as seen, in particu-JL lar, in Rio de Janiero. Rio was the site of a Portuguese military outpost in 1565. Soon it became an active trading post (timber, sugar cane and gold were extracted and transported back to Portugal) and, a few centuries later, temporary home for a royal government in exile. Noblemen were victims of the first documented housing shortage; 15,000 Europeans were sent to a city of 50,000 inhabitants.
