In a very short period of time, the emerging science of Functional Printing and Digital Fabrication has, in the words of Reinhard Baumann, General Chair of the Digital Fabrication 2010 Conference (DF2010), "...achieved a growing number of remarkable innovations, including the successful blending of digital non-impact printing technologies as material deposition methods [together with] other additive and subtractive patterning technologies." Reflecting the important cutting edge research presented at DF2010, this issue of the Journal of Imaging Science and Technology includes a special section on Functional Printing. The Special Section consists of seven papers based on presentations at NIP26 and DF2010, held together September 19-23, 2010, in Austin, Texas, that address a cross section of topics in digital fabrication and functional printing. These contributions provide extended versions of papers presented at the conferences and published in the proceedings.
