Silver assisted thiazolidine dye release reactions have been applied in instant silver halide imaging systems. The rate and extent of the release of dye depend on several consecutive reactions. The two main reactions are the dissolution of silver halide by ligand in alkaline solution and the reaction of silver-ligand complex with a thiazolidine dye molecule leading to the release of the dye. The efficiency of dye release at any temperature depends on the relative rates of the two reactions. An anomalous effect was observed at room temperature when the dye release was less with a silver ligand with a higher binding constant than one with lower binding constant. However at elevated temperatures the extent of dye release was greater with the more efficient ligand. Experimental results show that efficient dye release at any temperature requires the thiazolidine dye, which is coated in a film as a solid dispersion, to be in solution prior to its reaction with silver-ligand complex. A single step stopped-flow spectrophoto-metric method has. been developed for predicting the extent of dye released at the final step of the series of reactions with different ligands.
