Power-aware Task Group Scheduler: Power Efficiency and Fairness

摘要

Memory power consumption accounts for a large and increasing fraction of system's total energy. For alleviating this power issue, memory chips have supported different power/work modes, and some threshold-based memory power mode control policies are proposed to switch idle chips into low power modes. In order to effectively utilize these power states at the operating system level, in this paper, a Power-aware Task Group Scheduler (PATGS) is first introduced to decrease unnecessary power mode transitions, which divides the threads belonging to the same rank into one group while sustaining system fairness. In addition, we also propose a Dynamic Power Mode Control Policy (DMCP) based on PATGS. Experimental results demonstrate that DMCP can absolutely improve the memory power efficiency from 3.3% to 10.7% compared with the other studies.
