摘要

Infrasystems play a key role in the context of sustainable development. Infrasystems are large technical systems in society, distributing and delivering specialized services, materials, and assets to households, companies, and organizations. Infrasystems should be treated as sociotechnical systems; they embrace the people and organizations building, running, and using the systems, and they include the economic and legal conditions for these activities. Consequently, transforming infrasystems in order to gain environmental improvements must be regarded as sociotechnical processes of change. Infrasystems can be modified in a sustainable direction through system improvements, system synergies, or social innovations (i.e., the adoption of new ways of satisfying existing needs). Social innovations benefit from a profound understanding of the nature of infrasystem services, which can be explored through a structural approach wherein the services are linked to the utilities and conveniences they produce and the basic needs they fulfill. Moreover, the infrasystem service dimensions volume, content, and quality are important in the context of change. Measures to reduce environmental burden that involve reduced service volume but at the same time maintain service content and quality are preferable.
