In the past, before the rise of the PBX, Centrex services have been popular among companies with multiple branches. Centrex services allowed companies to use the 'large' PBX of the local telecom operator for internal purposes. As such, companies did not have to invest in their own, and at that time expensive, PBX and telephony infrastructure. Today, with broadband infrastructure in place and IP as the de-facto communication protocol, more and more telecom operators and new challengers will soon start to offer their next generation of Centrex services, also dubbed IP-Centrex. IP-Centrex is based upon inexpensive softswitches and uses voice over IP (VoIP) technology for the transmission of telephony calls. Compared with the 'old-fashioned' Centrex services, IP-Centrex will be a less-expensive and easier-to-use alternative to PBXs. And because the underlying architecture of a Softswitch is driven by IP technology and software, it means a myriad of new services, integration with almost any software application and the true convergence between the PC and the telephone. This paper gives an overview of the history of Centrex and the bright future of IP-Centrex. It also discusses the underlying technology, and advantages, of IP-Centrex, and how new entrants into the telecom market will be able to compete with the incumbents by avoiding the last mile for telephony services.
