摘要

The work presented in this paper is a part of a larger research effort in which we have been studying the problem of "mega-structures " and the relationship between shapes and their inner structural system. The most important question was: how can we control the relationship between an optimized structure and the image of a weightless physical or virtual model based on a formal concept, far from structural hypotheses? Our research has developed a design methodology starting from manual sketches and evolving through physical, virtual and structural models, embedding optimization during the early stages of the design process. The core of this study is a form-finding process which modifies the initial shape into a new version, through the use of specific software. The process also explores digital production, through small scale CNC models. This work represents a synthesis of a two week workshop held at the Department of Architecture and Planning - Politecnico di Milano.
