A Privacy Primer on Beacon Technology

If current media reports are any indication, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons are a polarizing subject. Recently touted as "the most important retail technology since the mobile credit card reader," beacons have received consumer concern and government scrutiny. For example, in October beacons appeared in New York City telephone booths. As quickly as they appeared, the beacons were removed due to a request from City Hall. This article focuses on three main areas: (1) a brief overview of the technology used for BLE beacons, (2) common business uses for the technology, and (3) key privacy considerations for application that use beacon technology.
