摘要

Imagine tuning in to your favorite radio station only to hear one of the year's most popular songs again. You begin to hum along. When the chorus begins, you chime in: "There's a long, long trail a-winding into the land of my dreams, where the nightingales are singing and a white moon beams... ." This scenario sounds pretty far-fetched if you consider the fact that "There's a Long, Long Trail" was one of the most popular songs of 1915. However, that is exactly what happened to radio listeners in 1940. That year, "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" was the most popular song, despite having been written nearly 90 years earlier. In 1939, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) increased the royalty rates that it demanded of radio stations to prices so high that many refused to pay. For 10 months, radio stations aired only public domain songs like "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and the works of previously unknown artists. That same year, Broadcast Music, Incorporated (BMI) emerged to challenge ASCAP's monopoly and, in the process, introduced America to pop music.
