摘要

Constitutionally, Bates v. State Bar of Arizona and its progeny allowed attorneys into the "ad game." The emergence of the World Wide Web nearly 20 years later, however, was the starting pistol most lawyers finally heard. As more businesses turned to the Internet for infor mation, having a Web presence rapidly moved from trendy cachet to business imperative. Clients, typicafly years ahead of most law firms in developing their own Internet presence, expected the attorneys who served them to be no less e-business savvy. "Beauty contests" for counsel now start online, and a sharp-looking, informative, and useful Web site can be the difference between being hired and being ignored. The siren song of cyberspace is irresistible. For a relatively modest outlay, any attorney can project a worldwide presence; the smallest boutique firm can look more impressive than the largest legal Leviathan. Lawyers were led onto the Internet not simply as a matter of marketing or status but because their clients demanded it: "In Microsoft's case, we insist that all of our lawyers have electronic mail. We won't deal with them unless we have that kind of access."
