Utilization of Biomass for Energy: Prospect, Challenge and Industrialization Strategy in Indonesia

Fossil fuels have been the main energy sources for the last few decades in Indonesia. However, current condition is unexpected, where the increase in oil consumption is most likely unbalanced by the domestic oil production. Moreover, air quality has been deteriorating especially in the major cities due to the massive fossil fuel consumption. This situation has made shift in paradigm to the supply of clean and sustainable energy sources by utilization of renewable energy. Green economic development is consequently concerned, where biofuels utilization program is fully supported and has been receiving a great attention since recent years. Some regulations and incentives related to biofuels implementation have been issued as part of strong commitment to the program. However, obstacles are faced in which the biofuels program is still difficult to run successfully. High dependency on market mechanism in the domestic market leads to uncompetitive price of biofuels. To achieve better economical prospect, integrated biofuels business concepts were proposed in addition to technological breakthroughs. Implementing the concepts allow to achieve stabled prices of raw materials and the product of biofuels at a competitive level to subsidized fossil oil. This paper described the aspects of utilization of biomass to energy. The discussion was focused on the prospect, challenge and strategy for industrial application of biofuels in Indonesia.
