When a transport organising authority is looking to gain insight into the financial structure of a public transport company, it will initially refer to the annual report of this organisation. In a market where financial means are not only scarce, but public funds are also involved, a clear insight into how and where funds are allocated is essential. Guidance information, sound financial analyses, monitoring and clear reporting are indispensable to achieving this. This article gives an overview of the DuPont model, which can be used to measure the financial health of public transport companies, and also looks at new strategies in terms of funding and increasing the quality of public transport.
