Toyama City is one of the leading cities on the Sea of Japan with a population of 420,000 spread over 1,241 km~2. It has strong pharmaceutical, IT, robotics and manufacturing companies, highly developed cultural institutions, and an extraordinary natural setting stretching from the sea on one side to the Northern Japan Alps on the other. Like other Japanese municipalities, city planning in Toyama has to contend with an aging society and dwindling population, as well as expanding suburbs that foster an excessive dependence on cars and result in a diminished and less attractive city center.
