Doubling the market share of public transport involves reducing the shares of competing modes and sharply increasing ridership of public transport modes. The UITP study on the scenarios for the evolution of urban trips (see page 33) shows that, by 2025, public transport systems around the world will need to generate 2.5 billion extra journeys - compared with 2005 ridership levels - in order to achieve a doubling of their market share. The number of individual car journeys will also need to stay virtually unchanged over the same period.
