Crises do not only affect mobility patterns in cities; mobility can also contribute to smoothing the effects of an economic downturn. In times of crisis, dramatic changes to adapt to new realities may be counterproductive, as they may trigger a downward spiral of falling demand for public transport that leads, in turn, to further rationalisation and cutbacks, resulting in a system that is less attractive to users and so leading to further falls in demand.rnThe great challenge facing public transport authorities and companies is to maintain and improve public transport services with less money. This requires both more efficient and flexible operations that are sensitive to demand and new formulas for promoting public transport.
