For fifteen years now electronic ticketing has been a central theme at seminars, conferences and congresses, including two specialist events held by UITP (first in Bologna, Italy then in Karlsruhe, Germany).rnInitial discussions focused largely on the technology and on proving that 'contactless' could be more robust and more reliable than 'magnetic'.rnAttempts to standardise and ensure consistency did not simply run into industry competition. The key difficulty lay in the fact that absolute interoperability had to mirror an identical commercial structure.
