Considered the economic hub of South Africa, Gauteng Province is home to 8.8 million people and is the fastest growing province in the country. The main transport service providers in Gauteng are:rn1. Bus: seven to eight major bus companies operate in the region. Services are subsidised and are one of the few services that are regulated and formal, awarded via tendered or interim contracts. In most cases, these services are already equipped with some form of electronic (smart card) fare collection system that runs according to a formal schedule.rn2. Rail: there is one major rail provider. Rail services too are subsidised and formal. Apart from the new Gautrain service that is currently being built and will have an electronic (smart card) system, all other services are ticket based.rn3. Taxis: these minibus-type services transport approximately 70% of all commuters. These unscheduled services are informal and are not subsidised.rn4. Bus Rapid Transit services: these are currently under construction to be completed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer event.
