Last October, the Policy Board members called on governments to invest in the public transport sector, stressing that public transport can compensate job losses in the car industry.rnPublic transport is a significant provider of jobs. For instance, in Europe, public transport operators alone create 1,200,000 direct jobs. Every direct job in public transport is linked to four jobs in other sectors of the economy. It provides green local jobs and in many cities, the public transport network is one of the major employers, and such jobs cannot be delocalised.rnIn order to provide key figures and arguments to support the advocacy of UITP and its members regarding the importance of employment and recruitment in the public transport sector, UITP is starting a project on "Assessment of Employment and Recruitment in local and urban public transport in sustainable economy".
