In the March 2007 edition of Transport Public Internationat, the UITP Light Rail Committee set out the potential benefits of group ordering of light-rail vehicles by different networks. This has now transpired, as the authorities in Brest and Dijon, France have just announced an order with Alstom for a total of 52 vehicles.rnThe group of experts had pointed out that the relatively small scale of orders for vehicles (between 10 and 20 units), a characteristic inherent in the market, left little room for large-scale savings. Now, "If similar light-rail vehicles based on an identical concept can be adapted to the requirements of various operators and to their purchasing plans within a given time scale, joint purchasing then becomes possible, thereby optimising production processes (...) [and] (...) improving financial benefits: it has been estimated that costs can be reduced by 5 to 10%".
