摘要

Should a public transport operator have to address issues other than metro, tramway and bus services? The answer in Brussels is "yes": to combat excessive private car use effectively, we need to offer users as broad a range of journey alternatives as possible. With this firmly in mind, in 2002 STIB set up a new department to focus essentially on expanding transport to include new services whose complementarity should help enhance public transport's appeal. Dubbed the "Transport Bouquet" since its reorganisation in 2007, the department's activities cover a broad range of mobility services. The department is endeavouring to develop an intermodalism strategy between bicycle and public transport. Within the framework of an agreement with cyclist associations, bicycle access in the metro and on tramways has been expanded, escalators at metro stations are progressively being fitted with channels along which bicycles can be wheeled, and over a thousand storage spaces for bicycles are now available near metro stations. Moreover, a trial is ongoing that involves the renting of sealed bicycle storage boxes.
