Over the last decade, the taxi industry in Singapore has witnessed an evolution, brought about mainly by the deregulation of taxi fares in 1998 and full liberalisation of the industry in 2003, effectively removing barriers for new entrants. Given the opening up of the market, remaining competitive is crucial and taxi companies are constantly refining offerings and introducing innovative packages to attract both hirers and consumers. This article offers an insight into the changes within the taxi industry that have brought about greater competition and innovation among the players and takes a look at how taxi companies have changed with the times to remain sustainable. It also discusses how taxis are integrated into the public transportation network in Singapore, and provides an outlook for the industry, which is expected to grow in the near future.
