Demographic changes have now pushed "family friendliness ", ranked until very recently as a secondary issue, to the forefront of economic factors. In Germany's towns and cities, the birth rate in recent years has risen steadily. Moreover, most German conurbations have been displaying a clear upward trend in immigration for several years. On the strength of this rise in family-friendliness, further increases in the number of children in towns and cities can be expected over the years ahead. The desire of the Leipzig undertaking L.E.Kidson Tour to provide help with the time-consuming business of transporting children marks a reaction to current developments in Leipzig, a city with a reputation throughout the rest of Germany as a dynamic and open place with positive future prospects. Provision in terms of child minders and babysitters as well as child-friendly school-holiday and leisure facilities is booming. Increasing numbers of independent, privately run childcare facilities are being established in Leipzig. The family- and child-friendly network currently taking shape in the city makes family- and child-friendly infrastructures both urgent and necessary as many families are restricted in terms of the amount of spare time and transport options available to them.
