摘要

This article has been written as a "think piece" for Public Transport International from the perspective that, in general, we know what needs to be done in order to achieve sustainable transport and it is within our grasp to accomplish this. However, there are barriers to this becoming a reality and public transport is still fighting for investment and modal share. This is partly due to inertia and a fear of change but it is largely due to our present economic model. This model, developed after two crippling world wars, has delivered a better standard of living for much of the industrial world, but it has also come with a high global price tag in environmental and social terms. As the true effects of globalisation kick in, an even more worrying trend is the whole-hearted adoption of this model in the fast-growing economies of the developing world such as Brazil, China and India.
