摘要

India has become one of the fastest-growing nations in the world as a result of its economic liberalisation. This has led to economic growth and improvements in all spheres of activity. Now, there is a need to have this economic growth supported by a proper base of sustainable development. In India, the Sustainable Development Summit is an annual event organised by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). At the recent summit held in February 2008, the focus was on one of the greatest challenges facing human society: climate change. On this occasion, the Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said "Government of India (GOI) will adopt a responsible and forward-looking stance aimed at promoting sustainable development". He noted that climate change impacts people differently, and the poor are the worst hit. He also stressed the need for technology innovations to reduce energy use by industry and other sectors including transport. The 11th Five Year Plan is articulating strategies in many of these areas for the country. He also mentioned that public transport is an area that needs immediate attention and that the planning commission has been working on a comprehensive policy in this regard.
