摘要

In Germany's capital Berlin, as in most cities and conurbations the world over, the debate on sustainability and environmental protection is also leading to ever-tougher air pollution measures and increasing restrictions on urban traffic. As such, Berlin's PT operator, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), as the largest local public transport undertaking in Germany, is being obliged to raise the bar higher with a view to environmental protection and in consideration of economic framework conditions. An examination of the evolution of thresholds reveals that the introduction of the EURO 5 engine emission standards for buses has already produced major progress. From 2012, with the expected introduction of the EURO 6 standard, exhaust values will need to be dramatically reduced yet again. Further research and development efforts are still required for this purpose. With this in mind, BVG is testing a total of 14 buses running on hydrogen as a means of investigating completely new drive technologies.
