摘要

Quickly, safely, comfortably, cheaply and without damaging the environment. This is how people want to travel in cities in this day and age. Growing numbers of us are opting for public transport, which is becoming an increasingly attractive choice in towns and cities with rail. Some 400 LRT and tram systems are in operation worldwide today, with 60 under construction and well over 200 planned. This continuing success was again illustrated by the high attendance levels at our recent conference held in Istanbul in June (see p.6). Europe is the densest LRT continent, with 170 systems in operation and nearly 100 more under construction or planned, but North America and Asia are also very active, and the next emerging LRT regions will be the fast-growing cities of the Middle East where the post-oil age is being actively anticipated. This issue dedicated to LRT will examine these worldwide trends.
