In recent years, a number of tight rail and tramway systems have started up in Spain - see right - with seven new lines inaugurated in 2007 alone. Modern, accessible and safe, light rail and tram lines improve the mobility alternatives available to many inhabitants. These new systems reflect a commitment to public transport and sustainable development by a number of Spanish cities. The last of the original tramways in the Community of Madrid was closed down on 2 June 1972. However, although the Madrid General Urban Zoning Plan for 1985 proposed four light-rail platforms, 35 years would elapse before the public transport system saw a light rail line again.
